The Aspern Papers by Henry James is a classic novella, an anonymous narrator relates his obsessive quest to acquire some letters and other private documents that once belonged to the deceased Romantic poet Jeffrey Aspern. Attempting to gain access to the papers, the property of Aspern's former mistress, he rents a room in a decaying Venetian villa where the woman lives with her aging niece. Led by his zeal into increasingly unscrupulous behavior, the narrator is faced in the end with relinquishing his heart's desire or attaining it an an overwhelming price. Inspired by an actual incident involving Claire Clairmont, once the mistress of Lord Byron, this masterfully written tale incorporates all those elements expected from James psychological subtlety, deft plotting, the clash of cultures, and profoundly nuanced representation of scene, mood, and character. The two previous reviewers have superbly praised the quality of this spoken word production -- it is flawless. The story itself is perhaps my all-time favourite tale by Henry James -- although I am also partial to THE SACRED FOUNT. I love when James is strange -- and this tale of obsession is very weird. It effects different people in a diversity of ways. Sheldon M. Novick, in his fascinating if eccentric two-volume biography of James, writes rather stuffily of the story thus:"The story was a cruel joke, and it concerned people who were still living; but the story was a great success. The atmosphere of Venice is beautifully evoked, much of the action occurs in an improbably garden, and narrator's evil deception is at home in the atmosphere of mingled innocence and corruption."
I recently purchased, from Amazon, the excellent DVD of James's tales, AFFAIRS OF THE HEART, and "The Aspern Papers" was one of the tales featured. This televised production shewed the real tragedy of the tale, the fate of poor Miss Tita, to whom was waved a phantom promise of romance, merely to have the spectral promise sink from view, like the clothes of Constance that James tried to drown after her unspeakable suicide (if such her death may be proclaimed). This magnificent story is so much more than a "cruel joke," as Novick unimaginatively complains. It is human drama of a rare kind, deeply felt and superbly expressed by a Master of his Art. The dramatic reading of the story here offered is a fine representation of a classic of its kind.

I loved this book. It is one of the easier reads of Henry James, and a little jewel .
It is a very interesting novel. You never know what is going to happen and the people in the novel has many different personalities. A great novel by Henry James!
This was my first exposure to Henry James, and most reviews said its brevity (~100 pages) enabled it to serve as a "good introduction" to the author. I am not opposed to reading classics, but often times they are difficult reading (and in many cases are intended to be). I've read Classics and enjoyed them (e.g. Anna Karenina, Crime and Punishment, etc.), but if this is an accurate representation of James' writing style, I doubt I'll read any more of his books. The story itself is interesting - a literary critic ingratiates himself under false pretenses to obtain (by hook or crook) the papers of a famous poet. But James, even in this short form novella, is the polar opposite of Hemingway, i.e. writing 200 words to convey a scene are better than 20 words. In short, this is ponderous reading. I guess I feel good about having finally read something of James, but again - maybe unfairly - I wouldn't be anxious to read more of his works based on this example.
When a gentleman writer seeking fame and possible fortune, conspires to pry private letters of a bygone poet from a reclusive and sickly old woman in Venice, he confronts his own sense of honor. The accompanying 1891 short story might be the model for many future fictional butlers, including those in Downton Abbey.
This is one of Henry James' more readable books and it is set in Venice which adds to the enjoyment of it. He actually wrote this book in a Venetian house which still exists and can be seen and the house is described in the book (as another person's house). The plot is a classic one -- with a real and dramatic (sort of dramatic) conclusion (not always true of James).
There is no doubt that Henry James's reputation as a master is well-deserved. This novella is a little masterpiece of mood, characterization, and atmosphere. Venice is described beautifully in just a few paragraphs scattered throughout. And the characters are wonderful. For those who want an introduction to James, this and perhaps also "Washington Square" are the stories to read. His precise language and knowledge of human beings is very nearly unsurpassed.
This is a cheap, pale photocopy of a typescript - absolutely plain, , lines close together, and worst of all, very light print. Against the white background, it's eye-blindingly difficult to read - a cardinal sin for a book, which isn't worth anything if it can't be read.
